The creation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA) marks a historic turning point for economic integration across Africa. This paper examines how eliminating trade barriers can unlock $450 billion in real continental income, reduce extreme poverty, and boost intra-African trade. Utilizing secondary empirical data, macro-level econometric projections, and trade facilitation insights, this study explores the relationship between border friction—such as customs inefficiencies and non-tariff barriers (NTBs)—and economic growth. The findings indicate that while tariff reduction is necessary, the majority of the projected $450 billion income boost (nearly $300 billion) will come from cutting administrative red tape and implementing effective trade facilitation measures. Consequently, we provide actionable recommendations focused on harmonizing customs operations, digitsing border infrastructure, and expanding cross-border payment platforms.
